On-site display – loop-powered display

In the management of industrial processes, it is crucial to have an accurate and fast insight into the measurement data generated by the sensors. The sensors do not have a display, they only detected certain physical quantities. Therefore, various local displays are in use, among which LED displays for installation in the loop are one of the most popular choices. In this article, we will explore the importance of a loop-fed display and an example of its use.

Image: Loop-powered display

The loop-powered display is intended for local display of process parameters such as humidity, temperature, pressure, flow, length, etc. whereby converters with an analog output of 4 … 20 mA are used as sensors.

Loop power means that the display is powered directly from the 4 … 20 mA loop, which eliminates the need for an additional display power supply. This simplifies its installation while reducing process costs and increasing user efficiency.

How does it reduce costs and increase efficiency?

Example: A pressure transducer with a measuring range of 0 … 10 bar is installed in a pipeline. The signal generated by the converter is sent to a control system a few meters or a few tens/hundred meters away. Perhaps the display is even part of the sensor design, but it is mounted in such a way that we cannot see the display, which is quite common. It is also common for the built-in display to be small and difficult to see/read.

Thus, the process operator does not see and does not know the current value of the pressure measurement, which makes it difficult to monitor the process and take appropriate measures. What good is measuring equipment if you can’t see what it’s measuring? Therefore, in such and similar cases, we use a local loop-powered display. Only this allows the operator to immediately display the pressure value, which enables control, setting, and adjustment of the process operation and quick action. This makes the operators more efficient at work because they have the measuring points under control. Not only through a remote control system but also visually and instantly.

In addition, the local display also benefits the maintenance team, allowing them to avoid dangerous tampering with devices under pressure or at high temperatures. At the same time, installation of the display is simple and fast and does not require an additional power source, as it is powered from a 4 … 20 mA loop.

The display is universal, which means that the user adjusts the display to a specific parameter. The applicability of the loop-powered display is wide and appears in various industrial sectors, from the food industry to the steel industry.

Conclusion

If we want our operators/technologists/maintainers to react quickly to the measurements and control them, they must have direct insight into the values detected by the sensors. Users spend a lot of time moving between the sensor installation site and the control room. By installing local displays that enable loop power, we save valuable time and enable quick action in case of deviations, maintenance, or emergency situations.

New membrane monitoring system with HART® protocol

The new membrane monitoring system with HART® protocol (DMSU21SA) helps to meet the ever-increasing demands of process monitoring in systems and/or applications for the sanitary or sterile process industry. The patented safety feature is based on a double membrane system with an evacuated intermediate space. In the event of a diaphragm rupture, this system not only prevents contamination of the process and the environment, but also allows simultaneous pressure control.

The control system comes with all sterile connections and special system filling fluids.

Electronic switch for liquid media flow

The electronic flow switch (FSD-4) offers full flexibility in flow control depending on the speed of the flowing medium. Switching points in FSD-4 can be easily configured using the three buttons on the device or via IO-Link.

The FSD-4 can output absolute values and relative flow values in different units, displayed on a digital display.

IO-Link – what is it?

IO-Link has become an increasingly important topic in recent years. But you can see exactly what’s behind the technology and how it works in the video linked below. More detailed IO-Link features are described on our product pages A-1200 (datasheet), PSD-4-ECO and TSD-30.

Sensors with diagnostic function

Pressure sensors with built-in diagnostic function and IO-Link provide the user with information on the current status of the measuring device. This can reliably identify whether a measuring device is operating outside its specifications and/or identify a fault or defect. You can find out more about the feature itself on the A-1200 product page.

On-site verification (IN-SITU verification)

Temperature control is an important part of hydrocracking operations, as it keeps efficiency and safety at the highest possible level. The temperature control technology does not need to be changed every time the catalytic converter is replaced. However, it is advisable to carry out a preventive analysis of the whole system.

On-Site Verification/Monitoring (ON-SITE) within the catalytic reactor is a service and is an excellent way to simulate the functionality of some of the important safety systems of the hydrocracker operation. The result is a protocol for verification/monitoring in the field. This type of service should be carried out as a final step before refilling the new catalytic converter.

Optimising hydraulic systems by integrating smart pressure sensors

Advanced digitalisation opens up new possibilities for optimised monitoring and control of hydraulic systems. An important aspect of this is the integration of smart components such as pressure sensors. You can see the pressure sensors here.

Mapping storage and chambers – ELPRO practice

A GOOD PRACTICE EXAMPLE - ELPRO helps you measure the hot and cold points of your warehouse, chamber, fridge, etc. with temperature mapping.

Temperature mapping (mapping or validation) is the monitoring of temperature in warehouses, chambers, refrigerators and rooms where it is crucial to achieve and maintain the desired temperature.

For healthcare institutions: the mapping or validation of chambers and refrigerators (e.g. for vaccines or medicines) with our kit is carried out in accordance with the requirements and provisions of the Regulation on the system for the reception, storage and traceability of medicines.

This procedure also identifies the hot and cold spots of the tempered system. Due to external influences, mapping is usually carried out in winter and summer.

Reasons for temperature mapping:

Process flow for mapping warehouses and chambers – ELPRO practice:

The temperature mapping of the chamber is carried out in 10 points. The process requires 10 data loggers. We have developed special validation kits where we rent you the right combination of calibrated memory units from our EBRO partner’s sales programme: the EBI 20, EBI20-T1, EBI 20-TH1. The set is delivered ready assembled, with set-up instructions. Your task is to place the units accordingly (according to the graphic instructions) and return them when the mapping is complete. We do the rest and prepare the validation report. In cases where validation is not successful, we look together at what is causing it and find a solution. The most common reason is an inadequate refrigerator, so it is wise to service/replace the chambers before validation. You can also contact our Service and Sales Centre at [email protected].

You can find out all about the service itself here.

The validation of the cold store (with vaccines/medicines), mapping of the warehouse and other confined spaces follows the same/similar procedure.

At ELPRO Lepenik we are temperature and humidity experts for routine control and validation of various thermal processes.

At the ELPRO Calibration Laboratory, we also calibrate your loggers in accordance with the SIST EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard.

Temperature monitoring during transport of vaccines

Control and monitoring of extremely low temperatures during vaccine transport, cold chain, pharmaceuticals, HACCP ...

ELPRO Lepenik, in cooperation with our partners, presents in the article below precision data loggers (meters) for measuring and monitoring the temperature during the transport of vaccines or in the cold chain. The latter were very necessary and relevant at the time of the corona of COVID 19.

In the Official Journal of the European Union (2013/C 68/01, March 2013) state that in-transit temperature monitoring equipment in vehicles and/or containers must be maintained and calibrated regularly – at least once a year (point 9.2); if temperature-controlled vehicles are used, the in-transit temperature monitoring equipment must be maintained and calibrated regularly. Temperature mapping must be carried out under representative conditions, taking into account seasonal variations, and information must be provided to customers on request to demonstrate that products have been stored at the appropriate temperature (point 9.4).
