Platinum collection and reuse after recycling

By refurbishing and repairing your platinum thermocouples, we save you the cost of buying new ones

The rare metal thermocouples (types B, R and S) contain platinum (Pt) and rhodium (Rh). Both metals are extremely expensive to extract and produce , and the resources are extremely scarce and low in the metal of interest, making extraction even more expensive. For this reason, here’s why collecting platinum and reusing it after recycling is a very energy-efficient solution.

Platinum and rhodium have outstanding thermoelectric properties and are widely used in sensor technology, platinum also for RTD sensors (Pt 100, Pt 1000, etc.), rhodium for thermocouples (Pt-RhPt). In the case of thermocouples (TC types S, R and B), an alloy of platinum and rhodium is used in the form of 0,35 or 0,5 mm wire (other dimensions also), therefore more expensive thermocouples and consequently more expensive thermocouples – TC temperature sensors. A major advantage of wire thermocouples is the ease of removal and collection for recycling processes.

Platinum collection and reuse after recycling

Since we manufacture platinum thermocouples, we collect platinum from worn or damaged thermocouples and recycle it directly to the manufacturer after the appropriate amount has been collected. The recovery is between 97-98%, which is an extraordinary result. This is achieved thanks to the purity and properties of the metals used.

This achieves:

a sharp reduction in platinum and rhodium mining needs;

a major impact on reducing the need to use other chemical compounds in the processing of platinum, which has an average ore content of only 2%;

a major impact on reducing water demand for processing and conserving water resources;

a reduction in the purchase price of platinum, which is accounted for as the redemption value of new items (old for new) – this is a forward accounting, we take the financial burden and risk;

the extremely positive impact on energy efficiency when platinum thermocouples are correctly and regularly replaced (see article: Correct use of platinum (and other) thermocouples and energy efficiency);

demonstrating a positive sustainability impact for the platinum producer;

Demonstrating a positive sustainability impact for the thermocouple producer;

Demonstrating a positive sustainability impact for the client of the thermocouples;

a real and tangible positive impact on the environment, resources and pollution.

Platinum thermocouples are atmospherically sensitive and the wire must not come into contact with the working or process atmosphere, so they are always enclosed in ceramic or other clean protective tubes.

When a thermocouple is damaged, the platinum binds to substances and elements in its surroundings, resulting in a change in its thermovoltage, which causes an error in the measurement. Such an element must be replaced immediately, regardless of whether the platinum thermocouple is still intact and apparently undamaged. We do this for regulatory, energy and financial efficiency – we say that platinum elements pay for themselves because they save much more than they cost. Not to mention the positive impact on the temperature of emissions and the reduction of the greenhouse effect. But we never reuse such a “contaminated” element – just to protect it with new pipes. You would be doing yourself a disservice.

PLATE COLLECTION AND REUSE AFTER RECYCLING

Return worn or damaged platinum thermocouples for REPAIR or REPAIR. You will receive a new thermocouple, we will use the rest as appropriate, and we will account for the platinum.

”I would argue that the cost of acquiring a platinum element is only a first time cost. Everything else is energy efficiency, and the best possible energy efficiency!”
