The ZbC2+ Zener barrier is a certified explosion-proof interface (protection system) for explosion protection of electrical equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres (Ex zones). It is used to connect a certified explosion-proof device (e.g. Ex transducer/transducer/sensor) located in potentially hazardous areas (Ex zones) to a non-certified device located in a safe area.


ATEX CERTIFIED BINUCLEAR EXPLOSION PROTECTION, ZbC2+ Zener barrier

The Zener barrier prevents the transfer of unacceptably high energy from the safe zone to the unsafe zone. The zener barrier must be installed outside the Ex zone. The output of the Zener barrier can be connected to measuring devices and controllers without ATEX certification.

The Zener barrier limits the amount of energy that can enter the blast zone to a low enough level that any spark does not have enough energy to ignite the explosive gas mixture. It contains two identical reversible diode interlocks in a common housing and is designed for DIN rail mounting in a safe area.

The certified explosion-proof device (also known as a hazardous area intrinsically safe device) and the Zener barrier in the hazardous area must be compliant. The intrinsic safety parameters Uo and Io of the Zener barrier must be lower than the Ui and Ii values of the device (Ui and Ii are the maximum voltage and current values that can be applied to the terminals of the device according to the certificate).
